Thomas Sinden is proud to announce our appointment as the principal contractor for the £10.8 million refurbishment and restoration of The Brook Theatre in Chatham. This significant project is part of Medway Council’s major regeneration programme aimed at transforming Chatham into a better place to live, work, learn, and visit for current and future generations.

The Brook Theatre, a Grade II listed building, will undergo extensive improvements to preserve its historic character while upgrading the facility to modern standards. The refurbishment will enhance accessibility, modernise facilities, and install sustainable systems to reduce environmental impact.

Graeme Sinden, Managing Director of Thomas Sinden Ltd, said:
“Having grown up in Medway, the Brook Theatre holds a lot of memories for me. I’ve attended concerts there over the years and even remember when it served as the council offices. It’s a real privilege for Thomas Sinden to be leading the restoration of such a beautiful and iconic local landmark. As well as preserving its historic character, we’re upgrading the building to modern standards, improving accessibility, and installing sustainable systems that will reduce its environmental impact. We’re proud to help secure its future as a vibrant, inclusive venue for the whole community.”

The full list of improvements will include:

– Improved access across the building for the public, performers, and staff, including new disabled access at the entrance of the theatre and to seating within the theatre

– New staging, lighting, and sound and digital equipment

– Upgraded office and meeting rooms

– Upgraded rehearsal, workshop, and dance studio spaces

– Improved dressing rooms for performers

– New digital equipment and resources to support the creation of contemporary performance

– Refurbishing the main theatre including foyer and studio performance spaces

– New toilets and hand washing facilities

– Beautifully restored historic interiors that run throughout the theatre

With the contract now in place, Thomas Sinden will be able to commence on the next stage of construction, with onsite hoarding due to go up in June. The theatre is expected to reopen in 2027.

The project is being delivered thanks to a number of funding programmes, including £6.5 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund and £300,000 from the Future High Streets Fund, with Medway Council also contributing over £10 million to deliver the improvement works.
