Overview

We were Principal Contractor in the delivery of this expansion of Castle Hill Primary School to create a 2FE all-through primary school. The new extension was required at the northern end of the site to provide accommodation for KS2 pupils.

This extension accommodates 8 new classrooms to replace temporary accommodation; a new library and ICT suite; a new kitchen/dining hall; a SENCO office and space for a Speech and Language Specialist; Improved staff and pupil toilets and additional playground space.

The new classroom building is single storey with a clerestory split pitched insulated standing seam sheet metal roof.
The new dining hall building is single storey with barn type facetted pitched tiles roof supported on glu-lam timber structure and traditional joisted flat roof to ancillary areas.

Sustainability Initiatives

The project has been designed as an exemplary low-energy project to meet the brief criteria of 60% reduction in CO2 emissions and BREEAM ‘Very Good’.

Key features include: classroom block orientated to minimise solar gain and maximise views over mature landscaping 180m2 photo-voltaic array mounted on the existing school roof excellent U-values - typically 0.15W/m2K for floors, walls & roofs natural ventilation & night purging via roof-mounted windcatchers solar control glazing to south & west elevations augmented with brise-soleil, low-eglazing to east & north elevations.  Smart controls to all lighting exposed thermal mass to regulate & minimise overheating.

Testimonials

I wanted you to know that both RBK and the School Community are absolutely delighted with the junior classrooms and the Dining Hall at Castle Hill. They are a credit to the work of Thomas Sinden and the whole project of the new works has been very successful.
